The French Revolution of 1848 and the Establishment of the Empire

The French Revolution of 1848 was the work of Paris alone, and of only a small part of the population of Paris. There had been agitation in the provinces against the narrow character of the franchise, but in the movement which sent the Orleanist monarchy ‘on its travels’ the provinces had taken no part. It can hardly be doubted that the great majority of Frenchmen were opposed to what happened.
