Meredith's early story is remarkably like Dickens's: both were born in Portsmouth (M. in 1828, sixteen years after Dickens); both were virtually orphans as children; both found their way into journalism before winning fame; both wooed the genius of comedy - albeit in distinctly divergent manifestations of that lady.
