Life and writings Elizabeth Barrett was born at Burn Hall, Durham in 1806, but her childhood upbringing was in the beautiful setting of Hope End, near Ledbury in Herefordshire. She was a precocious child, who read Homer in Greek at eight and completed an epic, The Battle of Marathon, at twelve.
