ABSTRACT
Justinian died on 14 November 565 without having nominated a successor. The most distinguished of the surviving members of his family was Germanus’ son Justin, magister militum of Illyricum, but another Justin, a nephew, who had for many years been cura palatii, was on the spot and secured his own election. Germanus’ son was transferred to Alexandria and then executed.
