ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters it has been shown that in order to represent a body of data adequately two parameters or characteristics need to be defined–a measure of central tendency and a measure of scatter or deviation–and moreover, it has been argued that of the various ways by which this might be done, the most effective and soundest method is by the use of the arithmetic average and the standard deviation. In these two values the body of data is briefly but satisfactorily summarized. There are also two other characteristics that are relevant–skewness and kurtosis–and these will be examined briefly at the end of this chapter.
