ABSTRACT
No poet writes or develops in isolation. Poetry emerges from a commerce between the old and the new, between, as Eliot pointed out, the tradition and the individual talent. Eliot’s ‘tradition’ was both rich and selective, involving principally American, European and English writing. Added to this, the period in which he wrote was full of major writers.
