Illumination is the process of lighting an object. This may be a visual task or the total visual scene inside or outside a building. Light is provided in a building either by the sun (natural lighting) or by the use of artificial sources (artificial lighting). The sun provides light within a restricted portion of the day. In order to extend the working day, supplement daylight or enable recreational activities to continue after sunset, a number of artificial sources have been invented. Although candles, oil lamps and gas lamps fall into this category, the most important sources today are electric ones.
