ABSTRACT

During this time the redress of the recent misfortunes began, first in military matters. On the Syrian side there was no difficulty, for Baybars died in M uharram 676/June 1277, and his successor, his son al-Sacld Baraka (Berke) Khan, was in no position to risk a further adventure. The only incident (which lacked consequences) was the concession in Safar 676/July 1277 of Malatya to cIzz al-Dln Aybak, a fugitive Syrian amir, who, after accumulating a year’s taxes, fled back to safety in Egypt.
