ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses upon the consideration which needs to be given to establishing an appropriate management structure and management subsystem for effective health and safety management. Unlike many manufacturing, product, or services sector organizations, contracting companies need to structure their organization and activities at two levels. They must structure the corporate organization, usually through the development of a parent management system, and also the construction project organization, of which there can be many and which can be greatly geographically dispersed and exhibit many individual features. This chapter provides the basis for appreciating the fundamental aspects and issues associated with management structure and systems and provides the foundation for considering the development of a health and safety management subsystem.
