ABSTRACT

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) gathers detailed, accurate and reliable information on workplace injuries, across a range of industries. Notwithstanding, only a proportion of injuries, accidents and hazardous incidents are reported under statutory legislation. Within construction this proportion is only around 40 per cent. There is little doubt that the discipline of reporting injuries, accidents and hazardous incidents needs to be improved. This chapter outlines how information on accidents is gathered and how this reveals the extent of reporting, level of risk, and accident trends within the construction industry.
