ABSTRACT

The general form of a simple quadratic equation may be solved by factorisation, drawing a graph, or using a formula. This chapter describes the solution for the simple quadratic equations with examples. Equations of degree 1 are equations of straight lines. The solutions of two simultaneous equations in each case are the coordinates of the points of intersection of the straight line with the curve. The highest index in a polynomial containing a single variable is called the degree of the polynomial. The chapter presents the rules applying to indices. Besides common logarithms to the base 10 there is another type of logarithm which is extremely important in science and engineering, called natural or Napierian logarithms. The chapter provides examples of simple logarithmic equations. Since the logarithm of any number is the index when the number is written on a particular base, then the laws of logarithms must be the same as the laws of indices.
