ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the place of the constable in the modern policing and social landscapes of Britain. Those landscapes contain a wide variety of communities, ranging from comfortable middle-class suburbs to inner city and declining zones enduring social and environmental deprivation. These different communities experience different crime rates and will require, or expect, different levels and styles of policing. The more difficult the problems to be solved, the more drastic the solution that may be required.
