ABSTRACT
The rural exodus is only one aspect of the profound modification in the social structure of France which has taken place in the last hundred years. Until the First World War, French society divided broadly into three main groups, bourgeois, ouvriers and paysans. These were not simply groups based on occupation and income, which could sometimes vary widely within each category, but groups which experienced radically different ways of life.
