ABSTRACT
At the most recent census (March 1999) France had just over 60 million inhabitants, making it one of the most populous countries of the European Union alongside Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. Despite a decline in the birth’ rate and immigration restrictions, the population is projected to continue rising slightly and to reach between 61 and 66 million by the year 2020.
