ABSTRACT
French society at the start of the twenty-first century offers the student a fascinating set of paradoxes. It is an urban society with a tremendous nostalgia for rural life, a society which simultaneously asserts its desire for European integration and for cultural independence, an extremely wealthy society which contains pockets of considerable poverty, and a society in which egalitarianism is a guiding principle but in which the search for equality has been all but abandoned.
