ABSTRACT
Captain W.F. Owen surveyed the coasts of Mrica. A.G. Laing established the source of the Niger. Hugh Clapperton and others crossed the Sahara, discovered Lake Chad and visited Kano and Sokoto. Rene Caillie reached Timbuktu and then crossed the Sahara to Fez. Hisjournal was published in English as Travels through Central Africa to Timbuctoo (2 vols, 1830).
