ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the extent to which globalized economy was possible to construct such a locally controlled economic and social development path in one particular deindustrialized locality in the northeast of England the town of Consett and the surrounding District of Derwentside. Music was a medium through which continuity with the locality's cultural history could be maintained and through which political issues relevant to its future could be raised. It is very important to stress that Making Music Work (MMW) was seen as an exemplary project, demonstrating the possibilities of an alternative approach rather than itself seeking to solve all the profound problems of the District. Many thousands of people were directly and indirectly involved in the diverse activities of the MMW programme. The MMW programme became entangled with the politics of Labourism which it set out to challenge and, whilst it was marginalized within its priorities, in the end it helped legitimate and reproduce those same politics.
