ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the main lineaments of a possible developmental model that would combine employment creation with environmental valorization in Europe. It shows how the economy might be restructured onto the path of a more sustainable regime of accumulation, and how a new distribution of work and employment might emerge. The chapter explains models of transition processes that specify the regulatory and governance conditions under which desired changes might be realized. An alternative approach based upon a transition to a different development trajectory, to a more sustainable regime of accumulation and enabling eco-Keynesian modes of regulation, that could deliver higher levels of social cohesion and environmental protection, is outlined. Eco-Keynesianism seeks to create a regulatory regime which will facilitate fuller employment and a more egalitarian distribution of work alongside enhanced environmental quality and environmentally more sustainable patterns of production and consumption.
