ABSTRACT
A rudimentary understanding of mechanics is essential if we are to understand many of the processes operating within an environmental system. Its particular application is in the movement of fluids and solids. An understanding of mechanics makes you think about the processes and what is driving them within the system you are studying. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, it makes you approach what you observe in a methodical, or scientific, manner.
