ABSTRACT

An introductory book on science for physical geography and environmental study would be incomplete without at least a cursory look at electricity and magnetism. In your studies of the environment you will not need to have a detailed understanding of any electromagnetic theory but it is worth noting that electrical terms are sometimes used in an analogous way in environmental systems. Also, you may well have to use battery or mains-powered instruments, or may use the magnetic characteristics of rock and sediments as an investigative tool. Therefore, it is important that you gain a reasonable knowledge of some key terminology and concepts. In addition, it is worth starting with the fundamental concepts, and then looking at the larger topic of electromagnetism.
