ABSTRACT
For years historians have noted that it was not the abolitionists who ended slavery in the United States. Rather, it was a combination of Union armies and the actions of the slaves themselves that led to general emancipation following the Civil War. Nor was abolitionism a primary cause of that war or of the sectional conflict between the North and South that preceded it.
