ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with issues of quality, from quality control to quality assurance (QA) and total quality management (TQM). Some of the reasons behind the slow rate of adoption of QA by architectural practices and the implications of this resistance for future improvements within the construction industry are considered. The problems of implementing managerial control over the creative process and more specifically over creative individuals is addressed and then illustrated by the case study. This describes the implementation of QA and the adoption of the TQM ethos.
