ABSTRACT

The management of the construction process is an area from which many architectural firms have withdrawn or been pushed out by other disciplines. While architectural firms have been slow to realise the potential of project management, by the same token they have been slow to realise the importance of construction management. This chapter discusses the importance of the link between the design office and the building site, an important link for achieving environmentally responsible design principles. The case study illustrates how an architectural firm can manage the construction process and reduce the cost of the finished building through effective management. The adoption of such an approach has implications for the quality of the finished product and feedback to the design process. In particular the link back to procurement strategy and client empathy is discussed as part of the firm's business strategy.
