ABSTRACT

In the early hours of 21 April 1967 the conspirators won over their patron Spandidakis who gave orders to activate the NATO plan. Then, confront ing the king with a fait accompli, they prevailed on him to appoint a puppet government, while real power lay thenceforth with Papadopoulos. During the day, prominent politicians were arrested and several senior military figures were deprived of their commands. In the following weeks, several thousand people were put under house arrest, or jailed or deported to prison islands.
