ABSTRACT
Webster’s International Dictionary defines a reference work as a ‘book (dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas) intended primarily for consultation rather than for consecutive reading’. I shall allow myself some licence here, as one social scientist’s reference work may very well be another’s source of consecutive reading.
