ABSTRACT

There is an enormous volume of statistical information accessible from Internet sources. Some of this is detailed in sections dealing with particular subject areas. Thus, for example, information relating to certain aspects of crime and the criminal justice system, particularly in the United States, can be found in the datasets included in the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data mentioned in the previous chapter,p. 173. Other information can be accessed through exploring some of the resources mentioned in Chapter 18 on Current News Online. One of the fastest means of finding statistical data is to use a search engine. In order to find information on the number of executions by country, for example, I used the query

<executions AND statistics AND (countries OR states)>

in Alta Vista Advanced Search, with statistics in the Ranking box. This returned 2371 documents, the first of which was an Amnesty International report for 1997 which included information on executions by continent.
