ABSTRACT
The excerpt taken from one of five sermons translated into English and included in MS Bodleian Laud Misc. Popularity of Maurice's sermons in France attested by the large number of surviving manuscripts; it is a popularity which must have derived in part from the simplicity in structural plan and language, which is clear also in English translation. Maurice's sermons fall into three parts: presentation in literal terms of a scriptural event, followed by an exposition allegorical and spiritual significance, the completed by application of the teaching to everyday morality. The translator is unknown, but by comparison with both the language of the Kentish glosses and that of the precisely localise Ayenbite of Inwit, he/she must have written in Kent. By the standards of these other texts, however, the Kentish in this manuscript is not pure, so that the text may have copied by a scribe from a more northerly location.
