ABSTRACT
What is knowledge? Distinctions are noted such as those drawn between experi ential knowing and knowledge from books, usually contrasted as individually held versus publicly available knowledge. Questions o f how social science might define fields of knowledge for research are raised. Illustrative material is drawn from the author’s research design for a critical evaluation o f the emergence of ‘holistic’ medicine in Britain.
