ABSTRACT

Gas- and oil-fired appliances are all contained within themselves and the design of many of them is such that there is no hazard arising from the floor below the appliance becoming overheated. Flue pipes for any oil-fired appliance in which the flue gas temperature is likely to exceed 260 °C may be made in any of the materials, but should only be used to connect the appliance to a chimney. Flue pipes to balanced flue units, and oil-burning fittings designed for low level flues should be sized in strict accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer. The Building Regulations do not deal with the design or construction of the large, free-standing chimneys associated with some buildings. These would, of course, be subject to the skills of a specialist contractor. Lights in buildings for assembly or residential use should be fitted with local switches, time switches or photo-electric switches as appropriate.
