ABSTRACT

This chapter brings together and summarizes the research described in Chapters 3 -7 . I begin by discussing the extent to which the findings satisfy the three requirements of a model of translation competence that I set out in Chapter 1. Next I set the findings in the wider context of translation research, noting that the fact that they are data-based sets them apart from much other research. The limitations of the research are dealt with next, and a considerable list of omissions from the model is listed and discussed. Finally, I discuss the wider applicability of the research to different language pairs, to different subjects, to different genres and to translation into the first language. The chapter concludes with a discus sion of the practical implications o f modelling translation competence for pedagogy and assessment.
