ABSTRACT

Large-area classifications have been attempted since the mid nineteenth century in a number of environmental sciences. More recent contributions have included those by Thomthwaite (1948), Meigs (1957), and Unesco (1979) for climate, Holdridge (1947, 1966) and Holdridge and Toshi (1972) for ‘life zones’, and FAO for ‘agro-ecological zones (Higgins and Kassam, 1981).
