ABSTRACT
It is remarkable that although numbers of elderly people more than doubled between 1901 and 1945 very little information was gathered in these years on either elderly people at home or in residential care. ‘A dearth of published information and, apparently, of interest too’ is how Townsend and Wedderburn (1965: 10) described the situation [Document 5].
