ABSTRACT
In addition to their perceptions of the influence of serfdom on the economy and the threat of serf protests, Russia’s rulers and senior state officials took account of other factors when considering whether to reform or abolish serfdom in the decades prior to the 1850s. A similar range of factors was also discussed by members of the growing radical intelligentsia – which included some nobles – who sought to influence the government.
