ABSTRACT
In 1497, the Flemish composer Johannes Ockeghem – chaplain and chapelmaster to three successive French kings – died in Tours at the age of 77. Laments in verse were written by colleagues throughout France and Burgundian Flanders while Erasmus, the greatest of the Northern humanist, composed a Naenia for the occasion.
