ABSTRACT
There was considerable demographic change in western Europe after 1945. This chapter discusses the causes and consequences of the fall in both mortality and fertility and the changes in the nature of the family. It will also discuss the degree to which the demographic behaviour of the different countries became similar, i.e. ‘converged’. The causes and consequences of the important changes in migration patterns are discussed in Chapter 11.
