ABSTRACT
In the last chapter we discussed the ways in which individual sounds are made. The points made so far apply in principle to any language. We shall now consider English phonemes as a system, so that when discussing any one phoneme we take into account its relationship to other phonemes. Much of the information in this chapter applies specifically to English.
