EVENT WR IT LARGE In 1956 American pressure stopped the Anglo-French mili tary expedition to overthrow Egyptian President Nasser, and denationalise the Suez Canal, dead in its tracks. This international intervention in a late-colonial episode is often seen as a great watershed, apocalyptically heralding the end of imperi al statehood for Britain (and France). The repercussions, it has been argued, were nOt juS[ felt in Egypt itself; American actions at Suez speeded up the process of decolonisati on everywhere [150J.
