ABSTRACT

Lone parents (and their children) have relatively poor levels of health and relatively high levels of disability. They also live in poor housing. These factors, combined with their low levels of income, contribute to making this group among the most multipally-disadvantaged in the country. For some lone parents, the high incidence of such problems will be partly responsible for their poverty - perhaps poor health or disability contributed to marriage breakdown or resulted in them losing paid work. For some, poverty itself might be responsible for poor health and poor housing. For many, these problems will exacerbate the difficulties of living on a low income.
