‘A city is more than a place in space,’ the pioneer town planner Patrick Geddes wrote, ‘it is a drama in time’ (Geddes, 1905). Shaping cities, Geddes believed, was a process that should involve every citizen in a learning experience which would help to give meaning to their lives.
