ABSTRACT

The contract is produced to suit four contract characteristics: Minor works on a lump sum basis and with an architect, a lump sum based upon drawings and specification, at 1987 prices, projects up to £70,000 value, and as the contract period is intended to be too short to warrant them. The works ‘may be commenced on’ and ‘shall be completed by’ the dates entered and practical completion is to be certified. Causes leading to an extension of time come within the blanket term ‘reasons beyond the control of the Contractor’. This catch-all expression is given as including compliance with architect's instructions not due to the contractor's default, these being given properly and possibly having effects on the time required to completion. Beyond the express illustration given of instructions, the term ‘reasons beyond the control’ may be construed quite widely, extending to cover many of the relevant events of other Joint Contracts Tribunal forms.
