ABSTRACT

In extra-tropical latitudes the regional climates are produced by the juxtaposition of baroclinic and barotropic conditions, by the strong influence of continentality, and by the seasonally variable latitudinal temperature gradient. Individual climatic regions may also reflect topographic influences. These various controls create not only distinct climate regimes, but also ensure that the day-to-day variability of the weather is a strong feature of the climates.
