ABSTRACT

All polymer-based materials use solvents for application. As part of a broad commitment to improve air quality the European Community is pledged to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) from the storage and distribution of petrol emissions 90% over a 10-15 year period. VOC’s are thought to be involved in the formation of photochemical oxidants which affect human health, all vegetation and contribute to global warming as greenouse gases. The importance of surface texture to the classification of colour is best understood by a comparison of artists’ paints. The colour of paints have been determined historically by the pigments available. Colour can be created by the physical splitting of white daylight through a diffraction grating. Modern coating systems have the same basic constituents of: binders, solvents or thinners, and pigments. Different types of paint have different constituents, according to their use. Initial coatings or primers should have good adhesion and be able to immediately protect the material against natural decay.
