ABSTRACT
T he rise of demographic history in recent years has brought a very technical sub-ject to the attention o f more general historians. Clearly nothing could be more crucial to an understanding of Europe's medieval past than a knowledge of how many people inhabited it and their life expectation. Here there can be room only to suggest the interest of the subject by putting forward some general considerations; to attempt a fuU coverage would be quite impracticable.
