ABSTRACT

Until an even greater war arrived, the First World War was always known to Europeans and Americans as the Great War. The First World War began, in part, because of the Balkan Wars. So soon after its defeat in the Balkan Wars, the Ottoman army was not ready to attack. Considering the low state of the Ottoman armed forces after the Balkan Wars and the losses in Egypt and Anatolia, it is remarkable that they did so well. Troops loyal to the new Armenian Republic were defeated, and the Ottomans marched all the way to Batum and Baku, securing the east until the end of the war. The First World War presented the opportunity for a new Armenian rebellion. At the end of the war, the Armenians finally were forced out, leaving Anatolia forever. The Armenian-Muslim civil war carried on past the end of the First World War.
