ABSTRACT

During the first half of the 1990s the most skilful political leader in the Near East led his country through yet another crisis which threatened its existence. The strength of King Ḥusayn was not that he did not make mistakes, rather that he did not lose his nerve when he blundered, but recovered and capitalized on the new situation. The truth of this proposition was demonstrated by Jordan’s reaction to the Kuwayt crisis of 1990–1 and its aftermath.
