ABSTRACT

The term ‘tower’ is here intended to mean a square or rectangular construction not longer than three or four times its width. It is assumed to be made of either 8 gauge steel scaffold tube or 7 gauge aluminium scaffold tube. Steel couplers are assumed. A full deck area of scaffold board is assumed, with guard rails and toe boards all around. The calculations given for stability against wind forces on aluminium towers do not apply to thin-walled prefabricated tower tubes with an external diameter of 50 mm, which are much lighter than standard aluminium scaffold tubes.
