The employment of women outside the home is not a phenomenon peculiar to the second half of the twentieth century. The distinguishing feature of the shifts recorded since the 1960s in patterns of female employment and in the nature of women's work is that they have occurred at the same time as major changes in family and household structure, thereby creating the need for new paradigms in the analysis of the family-employment relationship.
