ABSTRACT

The fact that a book is being written about migration and development implies that there is some kind of relationship between them. That this is the case will be apparent, but the relationship is exceedingly complex and few simple, or indeed causal, linkages can be established. The first stumbling block is the semantic difficulty of defining the two terms. We all intuitively know what ‘development’ and ‘migration’ mean but, when we come to identify and delimit their substance precisely, they prove elusive indeed. Both are dynamic terms that imply change: development suggests a growth, an evolution, an advancement; migration suggests a shift in place of residence from one area to another.
