ABSTRACT
It may seem paradoxical that as map making has entered a digital era, questions of the relationship between cartographic design and art are being looked at with increasing interest. Although many would not express it in those terms, the difficulty of controlling design in a manner compatible with the technological power of digital systems is raising old questions in a new form.
