ABSTRACT
In dealing with the problem of visual perception it has been shown that the ability to make sense of a map depends in the first instance upon visual information processing, in which the skill and knowledge of the map user are vitally important. The interpretation of the map also depends on understanding the meaning of the signs on the map, how these relate to the phenomena they represent, and the graphic structure in which they appear.
